How to Identify Moved Buyers and Champions Before Your Competitors Do
A moved buyer is earned trust arriving in a new account. Most businesses find out months late, from a LinkedIn post, after the buying window has closed.
A moved buyer is someone who bought from you, championed you or worked closely with your team, and has now joined a new company. They carry your credibility with them. In their first months they are reviewing what they inherited and deciding what to change, which makes a moved buyer one of the strongest triggers in B2B.
Why moved buyers get missed
The knowledge is fragmented. The person who ran the original project has left. The relationship lives in one seller's network. The CRM contact record still shows the old company. Nobody's job is to watch for the move, so the business finds out late or not at all.
Doing this systematically means maintaining a watchlist of past buyers, champions and close contacts, monitoring for company changes, and connecting each move to the account it lands in. That is exactly the kind of repeatable work the Opportunity Creation System prepares.
What to do when a buyer moves
A worked example. James previously worked with Sarah. Sarah joins a priority account. The system identifies James as the strongest route in and gives him the relationship history, the previous work, why it matters now, relevant proof, a reconnect message and the next action. James reviews it and executes.
Notice what the message is not. It is not a congratulations note with a pitch attached. It leads with the shared history and a point of view about the challenge Sarah has just taken on. The motions behind it, chiefly M5 Leverage Relationships and M4 Show Proof, are described on the 8 Motions page.
Timing
The useful window is early: the period when the new leader is forming their view and choosing partners. Reconnect early with something useful, before there is anything to sell, and you are inside the conversation when the buying decision forms. Wait for the perfect moment and someone else will have taken it.
Frequently asked questions
Who should reach out when a buyer moves?
The person who owns the relationship, not whoever owns the territory. Trust is personal. The system can prepare the context for anyone, but the reconnect should come from the person the buyer actually knows.
What if the person who held the relationship has left our business?
Then the history still matters, it just needs acknowledging. Reference the past work honestly, explain who now carries it, and lean harder on proof. This is also the argument for capturing relationship knowledge in a system rather than leaving it in individual heads.
Are champions only previous buyers?
No. Champions include people who advocated for you inside a deal you lost, users who loved the work, and partners who have seen you deliver. Anyone who would take your call carries warmth worth tracking.
